We are relaunching Silicon Beach TV
If you were a Silicon Beacher around July last year, you might recall we had a launch event for Silicon Beach TV at the Library @ The Dock. The idea was to create a pilot for a Silicon Beach TV channel on YouTube and perhaps even a program on Ch31 community TV to showcase the startup founders of Silicon Beach and their journey.
Here’s 6 minute trailer of the pilot.
Like most startups, this project never took off. When That Startup Show launched a few months later, we saw how much work is involved in producing a TV show. Equipment, personnel, high end cameras, editing the logistics…. etc, and we were glad we mothballed our project!
But we never gave up on the idea of showcasing our founders and their startups to the world. If Melbourne is to become a world class startup city, our startups have to go global from day one. Steve Blank, the much respected serial entrepreneur, educator and investor, wrote about this when he was last in Australia. Read the article here.
With the Australian government announcing changes to Employee Share Scheme and Significant Investor Visa (SIV) program, Australia is going to be a whole lot more attractive place to launch a startup and to invest in startups. Along with these announcements we heard that Twitter acquired a live streaming app for a cool $100million. That is Periscope. So we did a bit of research and found out that with the Periscope app we will be able to not only live stream events as they happen, but we can save the video file to the camera and upload to YouTube and/or Vimeo to keep forever. Ideal for our 90 second pitches and events. So the mothballed Silicon Beach TV lives…. to see another day!
We will be test transmitting on Periscope.tv throughout this month. Download the App to your smartphone or tablet and search for SiliconBeachMel and follow. Keep the App open to be notified of the next live pericast. View, comment and interact with us and with other viewers from around the world. We are promoting Silicon Beach to build a global following, members, sponsors, customers and investors for the community. Don’t forgot to follow us on Twitter @SiliconBeachMel and invite your twitter followers to watch when we are on air.
We will be covering Melbourne’s tourist attractions, cafe culture, art, gardens, festivals, sport, and anything and everything that makes Melbourne the world’s most liveable city. And of course, Melbourne’s startup events, co-working spaces, meetups and facilities for startup founders that make Melbourne such a great place to launch a startup. Recently Square, a global startup in online payments space announced they are opening their Australian HQ in Melbourne since it’s the tech hub of Australia.

Geelong Silicon Beach – 1st Meetup is on 11th June
Join GSB and RSVP here if you want to join us. You don’t have to live in Geelong to belong to GSB community. Cullen Pope is organising a group of Melbourne based Geelong Silicon Beachers to meet at Southern Cross and go together. That will be fun. Here are the details.
Thank you to all who came to the May Drinks. A good time was had by all, down in “The Cells” at the back of Royal Melbourne Hotel.
See the May MSB Drinks photo album for rest of the photos.
Thank you Nancy for being the photographer for the night. It’s volunteers like you that make MSB the best startup community in Melbourne.
A big thank you to the event hosts Trang, Ellie, Siana and others who made everyone very welcome, specially the many first timers.
And congratulations to the winners of the door prizes. Yes, we had a number of door prizes donated by our generous sponsors – Fostr Funding, Royal Melbourne Hotel and Foundr Magazine. Thank you to the sponsors.
We hope to have door prizes at all our future events. You have to turn up and be present when we draw the prizes (some early leavers missed out). We will not announce the prizes nor the time of the draw in advance – you have to learn to deal with the unpredictable startup life! Read the comments and rate the meetup here. Don’t forget to click “it was good to see you” buttons of Silicon Beachers you met & continue the conversations.
