The recent Facebook-Cambridge Analytica controversy has shone the spotlight on data privacy, with global governments now questioning the responsibilities of companies that track user behaviour and sell data.
In most cases, our data is used for good and is the reason custom personalisation — such as recommended shows on Netflix or YouTube — is possible.
Our individual data such as personal habits, medical information, and travel history is often willingly shared to help organisations design products and services that meet our needs.
Unfortunately, our data can also be used to misinform and influence decisions in a non-ethical way. It has been a race against time for government regulations to keep up with rapidly evolving technology and social media, and private regulations — as in the case with Facebook — often are within a grey area.
So how do you keep safe in an era where private companies often feel like ‘Big Brother’?
Our event, Click to Accept: Privacy, Marketing, and Ethics in the Age of Big Data will explore:
Privacy and ethical issues of digital platforms and its impact on you
The pros and cons of big data
The future of marketing in a data-literate world
The impacts of regulations on startups or organisations
